To finally select that preset for further tweaking or to export your altered image, you click on the preset.
When you hover over a preset, you see it applied to your image in the main viewer. The preset pane on the left hand side of the screen by default shows you previews of the presets being applied to your image (but can also be configured to show just the names of presets). Working with presetsĮxposure X5 comes with a huge number of presets, gathered into various motley groups. That’s really basic information that should be standard to display.

What I do very much dislike was that the rating given to an image is not displayed when looking at the image in full view (in gallery view, ratings are shown). Whether you like that would depend on how strictly you separate culling and editing in your workflow. Overall, some users may prefer the robustness and simplicity of catalog-less operation, and the fact there isn’t rigorous modal separation of culling and editing modes – compared to several comparable programs, Exposure allows jumping back and forth more comfortably. Speculative prefetch might be a good thing to add, but it is one of those things that has to be done carefully so that it doesn’t interfere with any current or imminent processing requested by the user. Notably, there also did not seem to be any prefetch of the next image in a sequence – loading an image took equally long no matter how long I’d been looking at the previous image. This is no doubt partly because Exposure does not cache thumbnails. Furthermore, I would say image load times were good but not stellar. Exposure X5 is certainly helpful in one regard – that there is no strict separation between culling and editing modes. I find that I cannot cull without making basic edits.

Whether a software could be reasonably used for fast culling is an important consideration for some. Unless you want to individually import each folder of images and manually select only the raw files at import, your only option is to sort by filetype and accept that you cannot then select any secondary sort order (I’d imagine filename and rating to be popular otherwise, along with the various timestamps available – the sort options are plentiful). While it can be nice to be able to compare colours between the raw file and its OOC JPEG, it does seem unfortunate that the option to exclude the JPEGs from import, or to remove them from the library subsequently, does not seem to exist. Doesn’t ask and can’t be controlled at import. when there is both a raw file and an OOC JPEG file of the same captured frame.

On the down side, Exposure in generation X5 still doesn’t know how to handle RAW+ shooting, i.e. I think this is a nice feature, especially as the thumbnails seem to be generated quickly enough on the fly! Exposure X5 builds thumbnails on demand, so there is no additional hold-up waiting for the thumbnails to be generated, stored and displayed.

Importing files was swift – on a fairly pedestrian Windows laptop, Exposure X5 processed 15GB containing about 900 16-megapixel images in approximately 2 minutes. So “(AlienSkin) Exposure” it shall be, for now.
Also, “Exposure Exposure” (CompanyName ProductName) sounds daft. As far as product naming amid the name change is concerned, my short-term solution is to refer to their flagship product as “(AlienSkin) Exposure”, for the reasons that (1) nearly every other product in this category includes a company name (Adobe Lightroom, DxO Photolab, ON1 Photo RAW, Skylum Luminar), and (2) that “Exposure”, on its own, is not descriptive enough, and it’s not always meaningful to refer to just one particular version of it.
